UNMOUNTED tiles are for direct application to walls, creating tile tables, etc.

MOUNTED tile panels are backed with 1/2" black wood and a chain for wall hanging. Mounted 6" single tiles are backed with 1/8" hardboard for use as a trivet or wall hanging.
